DRIVE M7 Aspar Team presents 2014 project at Sepang

The Aspar MotoGP™ team has unveiled its most international line-up yet at Sepang, with two former World Champions and new Malaysian energy drink DRIVE M7 on board as title sponsor.

With the second test session of the MotoGP preseason due to kick off on Wednesday in Malaysia, the DRIVE M7 Aspar Team took the opportunity to officially unveil its 2014 project at the home of its new title sponsor in a special ceremony.

Pulling back the covers to reveal the new silver and fluorescent green colours that will adorn their Honda RCV-1000R machines in 2014 were the team's new riders, Nicky Hayden and Hiroshi Aoyama.

With an American and Japanese rider, both of them former World Champions, and a new title sponsor, the team aim to branch out further into the international market. The deal between the team and its new sponsor is for three years, signifying a long-term vision that both parties are sure will prove to be a great success.

The presentation was attended by the Malaysian Minister of Turism and Culture, Dato Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Tan Sri Abdul Aziz.

Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’: “We are broadening our horizons, continuing our growth and establishing ourselves firmly on the international plane. It is very important for us to have reached an agreement with DRIVE M7, a huge company that forms part of the Mutiara Motors Group and that has a global vision. In terms of our sporting project we have switched manufacturers from Aprilia to Honda and we have signed two World Champions in the shape of Nicky Hayden and Hiroshi Aoyama to represent us in MotoGP. We are all very excited about this new project and we face a big challenge over the next three years.”

Nicky Hayden: “It is a new season and a new challenge for me but I am healthy and very excited. I have been very impressed with Mr Aspar and his professionalism - it’s clear he really wants results and is behind all his guys. I think it’s great we have a new sponsor and one of such a high level as Drive M7. Not only is it good for us, I think it’s good for all of MotoGP to see new sponsors coming from different parts of the world and this can be great for the future. The challenge of competing as an open bike and the new rules will be interesting to see how it all plays out and if it really will become the future of MotoGP.”

Hiroshi Aoyama: “I am really happy to be joining the DRIVE M7 Aspar Team. It's a very professional team with a highly motivated group of staff who work hard every day to achieve the best possible results. Hopefully this new season can be an enjoyable one for every single person connected to this project. We have a new challenge this season in the shape of the Open category, which is the future of MotoGP. 2014 will be an interesting and important season for us. I have a great team, a great bike and direct support from Honda, so I am sure it will be a good year.”

Repsol Honda Team celebrates 20th anniversary

Leading representatives of Repsol Honda Team gathered in Spanish capital Madrid on Monday in order to celebrate the team’s 20th anniversary.

The Honda Factory team has raced under the Repsol banner since 1995, the year in which Australian Mick Doohan collected his second of five premier class world title.

Over the past two decades, the alliance has achieved no less than ten world titles, 124 individual race wins and 338 podium finishes. Monday’s gathering took place in Madrid’s Campus Repsol.

"It's hard to explain what it feels like to see my bike here with other title-winning machines," comments current World Champion Marc Marquez. "It is an honour to be part of the Repsol Honda Team and to be part of the team's history with my World Championship. Joining this team was a dream come true. All my idols have come through the Repsol Honda Team. It was an opportunity that I had to make the most of and that is what I am doing. I enjoy every day to the fullest."

Whereas Marquez joined last year, Dani Pedrosa has been part of the outfit since the start of 2006.

"The alliance of Repsol and Honda is very significant - it's something of which many people are aware," Pedrosa says. "If you talk about this team, you know that it is one of the most successful outfits of recent years. The nicest thing is that this union of entities has lasted 20 years. This continuity is something that you don't see too often and I, personally, really like this aspect."

Premier class World Champions with Repsol Honda Team:
- Mick Doohan 1995-98
- Alex Criville 1999
- Valentino Rossi 2001-03
- Nicky Hayden 2006
- Casey Stoner 2011
- Marc Marquez 2013

Lorenzo’s best time of 2’00.573 - on the 27th of his 49 laps - on Wednesday left him 0.647s behind title rival and pace man Marc Marquez, but also behind his team-mate Valentino Rossi and the likes of FTR Yamaha-equipped compatriot Aleix Espargaro.

Lorenzo and Rossi worked through a number of different test items for the Yamaha engineers as well as some tyre testing for Bridgestone. The Spaniard made some improvements to the electronic setting of his YZR-M1 to provide further corner stability, leaving him happier with his feeling than he had been on Day 1.

"Apart from the position, which is not ideal, I think we made a step forward," Lorenzo commented.

"Changing something in the electronics, we improved the behaviour of the bike in the corners and it is now more like last year.

"I can keep a more constant pace and be a little faster for one lap. We need to keep working, as our rivals are strong at the moment, but today I’m more happy than yesterday."

The three-day test at Sepang will conclude on Thursday afternoon.

Bradl ‘very happy’ with improving Honda

Stefan Bradl cracked the top three on Wednesday as pre-season testing continued at Malaysia’s Sepang International Circuit.

At the end of the first day, Bradl had cited front-end problems as a complaint and looked to concentrate on braking stability and front suspension settings during the second of this week’s three days of track running.

"Today I am very happy," said the LCR Honda MotoGP rider, who ended Wednesday third and only three thousandths of a second down on second-placed Dani Pedrosa of Repsol Honda Team.

"It’s good to be back up in the pack with Marc (Marquez) and Dani. We improved our lap time of one second and, thanks to adjustments on the front, I have gained more confidence under braking. We knew that our potential on this bike was higher and today we have been consistent and fast.

"I hope that we can continue in the same way tomorrow: we plan to work on race distance to finish this three-day test session with a good base for the future."

Last year, the 2011 Moto2™ World Champion came of age in the premier class, achieving second place on the podium from a maiden pole position at Laguna Seca.

Lorenzo unsettled by electronics changes

The bike now is nervous with the 20 litre fuel regulation and I'm not very happy about that.

Jorge Lorenzo found the going tough as the Yamaha Factory Racing star began his 2014 MotoGP testing programme at Sepang.

Lorenzo isn't quite feeling at home on the M1 after changes to the electronics as a result of the new 20-litre fuel allowance affected the Yamaha's performance.

“As always it's difficult to come back again in a good shape after the Winter, some months without training changes you a lot so the first day is always tough. The bike has changed quite a bit compared to last year,” he said.

“I didn't do more than three laps in a row; I need to get more used to this bike and get more physical condition.

“Today has been especially hard because of the new regulation of 20 litres of fuel. We had to modify something in the electronics and in the new engine to enable us to finish a race with 20 litres," Lorenzo added.

“This has created a problem in the entry of the corner and the middle of the corner, because the bike is a little more nervous. It's difficult because you are using more tyre during the laps.

“Tomorrow our target is to make the bike more easier to ride like last year and we are working in that way. We are also working on the gearbox and the clutch but the bike now is nervous with the 20 litre regulation and I'm not very happy about that."

Lorenzo was fourth fastest overall with a best lap of 2m 01.082s, which left him 0.796s off the pace of Repsol Honda's Marc Marquez.

He briefly slotted into second position before being shuffled back to fourth in the closing stages by team-mate Valentino Rossi and Honda's Dani Pedrosa.

Rossi we've been very fast and I'm happy

It's a bit different working with Silvano Galbusera but I needed this change. It was a big pity for me parting from Jerry Burgess but I am happy.

Valentino Rossi was all smiles as the Yamaha Factory Racing star made a flying start to 2014 at Sepang.

The MotoGP legend was second only to world champion Marc Marquez, lapping in 2m 0.804s on the M1 as he featured in the top three positions for the duration of the opening day of the IRTA test in Malaysia.

Rossi, who begins pre-season testing with new crew chief Silvano Galbusera, said he has already made a breakthrough with the Yamaha as he bids to overcome some of the issues he experienced in 2013.

"The atmosphere in the team is good, I'm very happy about the work of Silvano Galbusera and everyone is in a good mood. It is only the first day and if I want to be more competitive and fight with the top three, we have to improve tomorrow and the day after tomorrow," Rossi said.

“Speaking in Italian is easier, but also motivation is high. It's a good start, but it is just a start.

"I feel good and I'm in a good shape. I'm happy because we've been very fast and always stayed in the top three positions,” added Rossi.

“We worked a lot on the bike and on the new stuff to try and improve my problems. We already found something. I'm happy because I feel good with the bike and was able to go into the 2'00 minute mark, that was my target. It's a positive day.”

Rossi was the first of the factory rider to make their way onto the circuit enjoyed a brief spell at the top of the times prior to the lunch break.

He was overhauled by team-mate Jorge Lorenzo in the afternoon, but a succession of quick laps towards the end saw Rossi retake second place on the time sheets, half a second down on Marquez and ahead of Dani Pedrosa, with Lorenzo fourth (2m 01.082s).

The nine-time world champion is pleased with the progress made by Yamaha since the Valencia test, with improvements to the engine braking of his M1.

“I already tried the 2014 bike in Valencia but Yamaha worked a lot for me on engine braking and helping me stop the bike, which was my main problem last year," he said.

“We can improve more but it looks like we are in a good way. And also for me to be in my second year on the M1 is better.

“I have more experience with the bike and can work towards being stronger than last year. It looks like this bike has very big potential."

Marquez leads on opening day of Sepang test

World Champion Marc Marquez topped the timesheets as this week’s Sepang Official MotoGP™ Test began on Tuesday. The Repsol Honda Team rider led the way from Yamaha Factory Racing’s Valentino Rossi and Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa, with leading Open rider Aleix Espargaro seventh for NGM Mobile Forward Racing.

Following the usual break for lunch in the middle of the day, the final of the eight hours saw track temperatures drop which allowed riders to push for quicker lap times. This duly saw Marquez post 2’00.286, half a second up on Rossi as both the Italian and Marquez’s team-mate Dani Pedrosa jumped ahead of Jorge Lorenzo's Yamaha in the final minutes of the day. The top six was completed by GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista and LCR Honda MotoGP’s Stefan Bradl.

At Repsol Honda, this year’s RC213V features a larger air intake in an attempt to increase top speeds and improve throttle response on the exit of corners, with Marquez posting the leading effort fresh from historically claiming the title in Valencia last year. In the Yamaha garage, Rossi continued to develop his working relationship with new Crew Chief Silvano Galbusera, who first worked alongside the nine-time World Champion for the post-race test after the final Grand Prix of 2013.

Much attention was on Ducati Team, with talk continuing to circulate that the outfit could elect to race under the new Open regulations this year; this would allow up to 24 litres of fuel as opposed to the 20 of the Factory Options, as well as working on engines during the season and not being limited by the new engine freeze. Also this season, all bikes in the field are running the spec ECU hardware for the first time; however Factory Options are free to use their own software, whereas Opens must adapt the spec software as supplied by Dorna Sports and Magneti Marelli.

The leading Open representative on this occasion was Forward’s Aleix Espargaro (seventh position), with Factory Option riders Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing), Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith (Monster Yamaha Tech3 team-mates) helping to complete the top ten. Colin Edwards (Forward) overcame early technical difficulties to finish 11th quickest, as Ducati Team filled spots 12 to 14 with Andrea Dovizioso, test rider Michele Pirro and Cal Crutchlow. The leading Honda RCV1000R customer bike was that of 2006 title winner Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar) in 17th place.

At Paul Bird Motorsport, Michael Laverty (25th position) suffered a frustrating start to proceedings, plagued first by brake problems and then by an engine failure. All teams were present with the exception of IodaRacing, which plans to make its 2014 track debut at the second Sepang test which is to run at the end of the month.

Testing continues at the Sepang International Circuit over the next two days, again running between 10am and 6pm local time (GMT +8).
