Dominique Aegerter to join Avintia MotoGP bike for 2015 season

Moto2 rider Dominique Aegerter will experience his first taste of MotoGP as he takes to the Avintia Racing machine on Monday’s day of post-race testing in Barcelona.

Recognised over recent years for his lightning-quick race starts and consistent performances, Aegerter has begun 2014 in strong fashion, with a front row grid slot in Austin and podium finishes in both the Texas and Jerez races. Riding for Technomag carXpert, the 23-year-old Swiss currently sits joint third in Moto2.

“It’s nice to be able to test a MotoGP bike for the first time,” Aegerter stated at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Thursday. “Avintia gave me the opportunity to ride the bike and I’m looking forward to it. We had some contact with the team because some of our mechanics know some people there. When they started speaking about next year, I said I would like to test a bike at some point; so we asked the team, this test was coming up and I was able to do it with them.”

Asked whether this test could lead to a possible full-time MotoGP™ debut in 2015, Aegerter noted that he continues to keep a close eye on potential opportunities for the future.

“I think it’s too early to say,” he continued. “For sure, we will look at what is the best opportunity with team and bike in MotoGP™. Maybe I will stay again in Moto2™. I really don’t know, but for sure you need to check now about what could happen next year, because in one or two months everything will already be quite fixed. That’s why we are keeping our ears open to see what could happen.

“At the moment, I’m looking at it from race to race and concentrating on this year. My team and my manager will find the best way with me for next year. I would like to finish in the top three at the end of this season with more podiums and some wins; if I could do this and have a good chance to go up, then maybe I will move up.”

Aegerter has finished inside the top five at every Moto2™ race bar two so far this season. His campaign now continues with the Catalan Grand Prix this weekend.

Aleix Espargaró signs for "Suzuki will open more doors" to 2015

Aleix Espargaro is aiming for a top six championship position in 2014, fully aware of the fact that there will be more full Factory rides available next year.

A third of the way through the current campaign, the NGM Forward Racing rider sits seventh in the Riders’ Championship and just five points off his desired position of sixth, which is ironically held by brother Pol (Monster Yamaha Tech 3). Since moving from the Aspar team at the end of 2013, the elder of the two Espargaro siblings is confident that his decision to switch to Forward had paid off.

"Going to Forward was the right decision because it was what I wanted, what I felt like doing," Espargaro explains in a candid feature interview. "I do not mean it like I want to take all the credit myself because, at the moment of deciding, nobody knew how the Honda RCV1000R (of Aspar) would go or how the Forward-Yamaha would be, so I have been lucky. But it was what I felt inside of me – I had to do it and time has proven me right."

Openly admitting that he has the option to return to Aspar next year, sporting a close relationship with team owner Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martinez and still undecided over his future, Espargaro is also keeping a close eye on Factory teams such as Suzuki, with the Japanese marque set to return to MotoGP™ for the 2015 season.

"I know more doors will be open with the arrival of Suzuki," the Spaniard continues. "The more factories we have on the grid, the better, and we need to be fast because it is clear that – when a Factory like Suzuki arrives – they will want to sign the best riders and that will come down to them looking at the final championship standings and seeing who is up there. So my aim is to finish within the top six in the championship in order to have my options."

Over the first six races of 18 this year, Espargaro averages seventh place in qualifying and ninth place in the Grands Prix. His next destination of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was the scene of his only career podium to date in 2011, when he finished third behind Stefan Bradl and Marc Marquez in the Moto2™ race.
